About me

Bio
Olivia Varnell is an Illustrator and Fine Artist who has been creating fantastical characters for as long as she can remember. Her work is inspired heavily by formative media of her childhood, such as Studio Ghibli and Magical Girl Anime.
She has worked as an art vendor at events such as ArtsGoggle, Mainstreet Arts Festival, and Rubber Glove's Community Bazaar.
While attending the UNT CVAD program for a BFA in Studio Art with a Concentration in Drawing/Painting, Olivia has honed her technical skills and opened the door to more conceptual work in her Senior Studio Class.

After graduating in Fall 2022, she hopes to work in the Publishing Industry, specifically illustrating Children's Books, and expanding her freelance and graphic novel Portfolio.

Artist Statement

Storytelling and reading has impacted my life and work from an early age, culminating into a passion for narrative Illustration. My work uses color and whimsy to explore the highs and lows of life, often in a humorous way. Much of my recent work explores the feeling of isolation in a mental space, and the intersection of queer intimacy, kitsch, and my own life experiences.
Representation of different races, ethnicities, and identities is a main goal of my illustration practice, especially highlighting LGBTQ identities to uplift my community.
In creating different works and book illustrations, I hope to expand the conversations we have with mental health and foster mine and other's healing.
